Common patient concerns and FAQs

Antibiotics can stop an infection from spreading to your bloodstream, but they do not offer a miracle cure for a dental abscess on their own. Because the tooth is dead or infected, antibiotics cannot reach the bacteria hiding in your tooth. The pain will temporarily be alleviated, but the abscess will likely return. Hands-on dental treatment is necessary.

Dr Disha Gupta and our team put nervous patients at ease are specifically trained in patient care and can help make nervous patients feel more relaxed. We’ve worked with hundreds of nervous patients, taking the time to explain the process and treatment and stopping if it gets too much. Our appointments are never rushed.

If you have persistent tooth pain that won’t go away, it’s often a sign that the nerve inside the tooth is inflamed or infected. Painkillers may help temporarily, but you should book an emergency appointment to treat the root cause of the issue.

Common symptoms include throbbing pain, swelling, a gum “pimple”, a bad taste in the mouth, pain when biting, facial swelling or feeling generally unwell

Yes. A dental abscess is an infection and should not be ignored. Same-day dental care is recommended.

Sometimes pain can settle for a short time, but this does not always mean the problem has gone. If the nerve dies, the pain may ease before an infection or abscess develops.

This is dependent on the cause. You may need a filling, abscess drainage, root canal treatment or a tooth extraction. Your dentist will assess the tooth and explain the best option.

In many cases, pain can be relieved at the emergency appointment by reducing pressure, treating infection, applying a calming dressing, or starting appropriate treatment.

Only go to A&E immediately if you have swelling affecting your eye, neck or breathing, difficulty swallowing, a high fever or feel very unwell.

No. Tooth infections can spread and may become more serious over time.

You can take suitable pain relief, avoid chewing on the painful side, keep the area clean and rinse it gently with warm, salty water.
